The Place of Peace
The Hei-Sei-Ji temple is located at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. It was given to Furman University and the Greenville community as a gift from the Tsuzuki family of Nagoya, Japan. Reconstructed on Furman's campus in 2008, it is currently the first known Japanese temple to be brought to the United States.
The Tsuzuki family, residents of both Japan and Greenville, gave Furman University the Hei-Sei-Ji temple as a gift. They decided that the university would be a great recipient of the temple to help the efforts of the university to strengthen their Asian Studies program.
Reconstruction began in 2008, after enough money was raised to hire a team of Japanese experts to reconstruct the temple. The team recreated the temple using over 2400 pieces that had been shipped from the original site in Nagoya, Japan.
The temple was dedicated on September 2008. At the dedication, the temple received a traditional Buddhist blessing from Dr. David Shaner and family members of the Tsuzuki family spoke about their memories of the temple as children in Japan.
The Place of Peace is used frequently, not only by professors and students of Furman University, but also by the Greenville public. Most commonly the temple is used for meditation. It is also part of Furman's sustainability initiative.
